As a retro tech enthusiast I beg of you not to trash them. Put them on facebook marketplace, craigslist, ebay, whatever. Nerds like me will take them off your hands happily, and regular people can still use them for daily tasks. I'm typing this out on a 2014 macbook pro, and I use a 2011 imac for any fun side projects I like doing so I don't mess up my main PC. You can also donate them to goodwill or salvation... If the recovery partition is between them you will have to move the recovery partition into the empty space using something like Gparted on a USB stick and then expand the C partition with disk partition or easeUS. Source: 11 months ago

In order to extend a partition, the unallocated space must immediately follow the partition. If there's something between the partition and the unallocated space, then you'll need to use a more sophisticated partition manager to rearrange things. GParted can do this, for example. I think Macrium Reflect can do this, too, though I usually use it for cloning. Source: 12 months ago
